One of the individuals I met at Green Drinks was Matthew Gerson, one of the founders of eConscious.org. I visited the Web site this morning to find out more about the work he is doing. The Web site is a portal for consumers looking for eco and fair trade products. Every product featured on the site must meet at least 2 out of 3 criteria of sustainability: environmental, social and economic. It looks like they’ll have a variety of different products: clothing, furnishing, outdoor furniture, etc. But one of the unique aspects of the business is that once you are a member of eConscious.org then 25% of your purchase is donated to a charity you have nominated.
The cost to become a member is $25 but if you are one of the first 8,000 then you become a lifetime member. They have a fairly extensive list of charities where your 25% can go. Here is a short faq that answers some questions about who they are and what they are doing that is worth the read. The site is worth keeping an eye on and I’ll be interested to see the type of response they get. I am particularly interested in the "ride naked & moko" and "iWood designs" products.
