Ice Storm in Texas

I was checking out the local news in San Antonio, which is where my family lives. The ice storm down there is huge and has caused road, businesses and schools to be closed. I was reading this article, "Good will abounds on a gloomy day in San Antonio" and have pulled this section out.

Icy bridges left some motorists using city streets as alternate routes to work. By Tuesday morning, public works crews had put down 400 gallons of de-icing fluid and 72 cubic yards of chat rock on some of the city’s roughly 3,700 miles of streets.

"We don’t use sand or salt, because of the aquifer," said Monica Ramos, spokesman for the city’s public works department. "Chat rock is environmentally friendly. We have plenty of materials on standby."

They are using environmentally friendly chat rock to de-ice their streets. Wow! Now, I know this renewed interest in the environment isn’t just a flash in the pan. Great news coming out of Texas.
